Most of us here on TSN have had Saabs and other European cars for a long time. We not only appreciate the difference, but are sensitive to the pluses and minuses of different cars. As we all know, whether you're accustomed to a Saab, an Audi, a Bimmer or a Benz, when you get into a domestic or even a Japanese car, the difference can be quite dramatic.
Many people who buy domestic have *always* bought domestic and don't realize the difference. And to be fair, Saabs and other Euro cars probably don't seem all that different to the average person on a short test ride. It's the long runs that count. At the same time, many of these people just don't care, or figure it's not worth the money to be comfortable on long trips. Or still think that couch-soft seats are the way to travel.
A good friend and business colleague is a drag race, V-8 Chevy kind of guy. Doesn't really like imported cars. We were on a video shoot in FL back in December and he'd rented an Impala. We had a two hour drive and in about an hour my back was asking, "And what was it I did to have you treat me this way?" Soft seats, poor thigh support, limited range of adjustment. Typical Chevy. He thinks it's normal, just as he thinks it's normal to have to steer a car to keep it in a straight line.
He's been hearing me talk about Saabs, which he thinks are totally weird, but a month back we were at his place in NY and we did all our running around in my car as his kid had borrowed his. He was really surprised at the amount of poke only 200 HP provided and at how comfortable the seats were. He's not about to convert, but he's learning. As I pointed out to my buddy, "You drive for 8 hours and realize your back doesn't hurt, that you're not tired, and that the car just tracks down the road." He hears me, but really doesn't believe it can be like that.
Each to his own.
