To change tires you just need to jack the car, but don't really need jack stands. However, if you have to crawl under a car for any reason, jack it up and support it with stands. I guy in a town near me literally suffocated under his car over when his jack collapsed on him and prevented him from being able to breathe.
I jack up one corner at a time to do tires on my my 9000 or the 9-5.
I always block a wheel on the car so it won't roll, but that's mostly because my driveway is sloped. But as I think about it, I've done that even when the driveway was flat.
