The last original parts of the Alaska highway were replaced in the early 90's; it's paved from end to end and lots straighter than the old days, which it seems you know about, although your post suggests an unfamiliarity with the degree of improvement.
These days Highways Yukon has been taking complete 20mi or so stretches and doing total road realignments - I think lately they've been working on the part along Kluane Lake, which is a shame, because it was a very fun narrow, curvy & scenic run - now it's probably just scenic. The Kluane Lake work is to be finished in June, so I'm thinking 2008 is a rare year with driving miles and miles through the dust at 25mph behind a pilot car.
Enjoy the trip, it will take days & days. If you do it in May, and take the side trip to Haines (highly recommended - a very pretty place), check the weather, as once in Haines Junction enjoying lunch under blue skis and green leaves I didn't and ended up in the teeth of a full blown gale force white out in Chilkat Pass just two days after I switched my studded snows for my summer P6's on my old C900T.
Get a copy of The Milepost - http://themilepost.com/ - an annual publication on Alaska Highway conditions, facilities, etc. Have a great trip.
