We're on studded Nokian Hakka 2s.
Car is a bit low in the back due to spare tire in trunk, plus gear, plus tools, plus spare parts. Windshield is not completely wrecked but it took a number of hits and is pitted.
We brought a 2.5 gallon gas can (on the roof) but didn't need it. Some teams carried 10 gallons on top. Tank spec for 1985 900T is 15 gallons IIRC; we averaged ~22 mpg with all the weight, the rack, and highway speeds. We got better mileage than most cars there.
The Dempster is open *mostly* year-round; however, there are spring and fall closures due to a couple river crossings that cannot be done unless they are either completely iced over or ice-free (ferry) (http://www.inuvik.ca/tourism/dempsterhighway.html).
The road is supposedly slippery without snow when there's been rain: the clay in the dirt makes for slick driving. I've not been any other time except a few weeks ago. In summer, I imagine there's a lot more traffic on it (and all of the other roads up there in AK/YK/NWT). I've been told the Alaska Highway is chock full of RVs...
