Do it -- the country up there is indescribably remote, vast and beautiful.

I just got back from competing in the Alcan 5000 (map: http://www.alcan5000.com/pdf/08AlcanRt4.pdf). In 12 days, we put about 5,500 miles on a 1985 900 Turbo with 260k on the clock (original bottom end) before we left. We had no problems with the car; however, we know how to work on it and brought tools and spares.

We drove on the Alaska, Cassiar, Klondike, and Dempster highways, and on the frozen Mackenzie River/Arctic Ocean up to Tuktoyaktuk). Most of the driving was on hard snow, ice, and frozen gravel.

In summer, if you're going to be on gravel, then budget a new windshield. Bring at least one mounted full size spare. As far as we could tell, the paved roads don't get rough with potholes like elsewhere. Whenever we were on pavement, the surface was good.

Satellite phone is a good idea, too, if you're traveling alone. Depending on where you are, if your car breaks down, no one will know anything about a Saab. Then again, they're not as unusual as they used to be.

Depending on where you go, you will be FAR from help. Here's a link to a photo of a Saturn we found that had slid off the Dempster and rolled. It's been there since September: http://www.flickr.com/photos/teamdrally/2287203633/in/set-72157603975223581/

Here's the Saab on the Arctic Ocean, en route to Tuktoyaktuk:

Don't mess up on the Dempster!
