Another option that you have open to you is not take the ALCAN at all and use the Alaska Marine Highway (a bit more spendy, but the scenery can't be found anywhere else). I spent 7 years in the Southeast and used the Marine Highway extensively. It is the only way to get to some of the southern towns (Ketchikan, Wrangell, Juneau, Petersburg, Sitka etc.)

You can drive from Vancouver BC up the Frazer valley to Prince Rupert (sp), and then catch the ferry, or you can start in Bellingham Washington and catch the ferry there as well.
One of the great things about the ferry is that when you get to one of these isolated communities (they actually call them boroughs) is that you have your car to explore the area, but you didn't have to take any chances on the "open" road.
The ferry can take you all the way out the Aluteian (sp) chain if you want. But most just take it to Skagway / Haines and then drive from there to Anchorage.
Mike in Anchorage can probably tell you more about the interior, but I know the Southeast really well.
