Back in the day I used to be able to run by Saab of Sacramento and have them pull a code or reset a light or whatever... they weren't a good dealer, but at least they'd try to be helpful if they had the time.
These days, no such luck. They won't even get out of their chairs for less than $100. I understand the difficulty in giving out freebies, and I understand that they are there to make money, and I understand that any time you do anything you open yourself up for liability - BUT - it seems to be if you were a struggling brand under a struggling company you might go a little out of your way to give your customers and your potential customers a warm fuzzy that will cause them to come back and recommend you to their friends. I love Saabs, but I actively steer people in this area away from them because I'd hate to subject *anyone* to the local dealer.
Saab has a lot to do to improve its image in the marketplace - even though they are making some very nice cars these days - top notch in all respects - it's going to take time before the general public notices and puts to rest their fears that Saabs are quirky, unreliable, and hard to work on. A little easy PR from the dealers would go a long way IMHO. If I could in clear conscience tell my friends and coworkers that they will love our dealer and working with them is a true pleasure, I believe that some folks might very well skip the BMW dealer and drive the extra 1/4 mile up the street. As it stands, if you have to choose between two unkind dealers, you might as well choose the one that'll sell you a car with good resale and a good public image...
That's my $0.02...
