It's mostly good things you point out and it make sense to some extend, but also think about that many shops don't want and care for educated/tech savvy customers.
That group is much smaller than the group dropping off the car no questions asked, pay the bill presented, leave happy but poorer group.
So if they could choose between the two groups, they pick the latter because the profit it bigger with less time "waisted" on talking to the customer.
Charging for diagnostic is here to stay and people need to get used to it or stop buying new cars.
It will get worse and Volvo for instance is spearheading the technology with BMW and MB right there.
Many Volvo shops decides to either close the doors or change brand instead of getting into this new stuff.
The cost of staying updated on factory scan tools are very high and those money needs to be earned back before it's time to update the tool again.
A snap-on wrench, socket or screwdriver with lifetime warranty as it used to be, was a one time investment.
And as I have said before, no one seems to be up in arms when a doctor charge the same for a 10 min visit that doesn't lead anywhere but to more visits with other doctors that he refers you too.
