This is a tragedy for sure. But Saab is one of the only manufacturers that doesn't offer (or recently offered) jump seats in the premium wagons.
Audi, MB, Volvo all do (or did). All are in the so called - crumple zone but doesn't this also include just about every mini van on the market and some of the new crossover vehicles? When asked why Saab doesn't have one, the dealers say they are not safe, yet Saab is one of the only premium wagons left that don't have rear passenger side bags - is this contradictory?
As I own a V70 with jump seat, there are weight limitations to its use. We also impose a common sense limitation - use it only when absolutely necessary (more than 5 in the car) and for short trips only, when possible.
Both the Saab 9-5 and Volvo V70 are big enough wagons to hold 5 comfortably, even for long trips, so my advice is to use the jump seat only when necessary and reduce you risk.
