to protect people in the 3rd row if the car is rear-ended.
Having seating in the crumple zone is pure marketing. And no one reads the owner manual that puts in the disclaimer that it's not really safe to put people in those seats.
Sure, having the 3rd row seats be front-facing will help protect people in a rear end collision, but I sure wouldn't want my kid to be in the 3rd row of any minivan or wagon when it got rear ended.
