My problem was with the fan, but not the same as your's Dean. The hub of the fan was worn out. I thought about shimming it back up, but the 14yo plastic seemed brittle, and my local parts guy charged a reasonable $25 for the squirrel fan, so I just bought it.

That is not to say that there wasn't a LOT of lint inside the dryer. The fan and housing were clear but the chamber that came off the door and took a right angle had a couple of inches of sediment just before going into the blower. The blower housing, 'exhaust pipe', and flexible hose were fairly clean. There was a fair amount of lint throughout the inside of the dryer. Everything got vacuumed and wiped. It looks so much happier.

I could see how a dryer with more lint could catch on fire. I always thought that was just an issue for the outgoing hose.

Regarding jp's luck with appliances, there may be a reason. I was told at a large appliance retailer that household appliances are no longer built to last 20-25yrs. The average is now 8yrs. That makes it hard for me to want to run out and buy a new machine for more money than the old that may not last as long as the old. And they do exactly the same thing....

The matching 14yo washer had a micro switch go out two years ago. I thought about buying new, but decided to learn about washers. I took out the switch assembly, ran it over to my friendly maytag parts guys, and they tested the individual switches and charged me $2.50 for the bad one. They are my go to guys now... I'm going to try and keep these going until someone wants to build stuff that lasts.
