My wife and I were born and raised about six blocks from each other and have never lived anywhere but in the city. Our children are grown with families of their own and many times throughout the years, we've spoken about the "simpler times" when we were kids. Truth be told, there were just as many pedophiles and bullies back then......they just didn't have Internet access. And think about how many more people, including children, who were killed in auto accidents due to lack of seatbelt awareness, lack of any seatbelts in the vehicle at all, absence of energy absorption in a crash, or the friendly dash controls waiting to impale those in the front seat (I have a scar on my leg as testament to such design). All things considered, today's times are fairly safe. Alot of kids today display a lack of "street sense." I'm not implying that you should teach your kids to be slicksters, but they have to know what's out there that could be harmful to them. My kids were taught to take the city bus and train systems everywhere. As a matter of fact, I was more fearful for their safety when they started driving the family cars from a standpoint of an accident. I have a friend who has child, an only child. When he went away to college, they decided to get a "private dorm room" for him, their reason being that he's not used to sharing since he was an only child. It's not my kid, so I never gave my friend a personal opinion on the subject, but is that teaching your kid to live in the real world? Maybe when he gets his first job, mom and dad can speak to his boss in order to ensure that the kid gets a private office with a window.
I've always wondered when I see a so-called "child expert" on one of these fluffy morning TV shows, how exactly did they become an "expert?" There was actually one of these "experts" on one of these shows last week blaming, are you ready for this......Mr. Rogers!!!! Can you believe this, Mr. Rogers for God's sake!!!! Her theory is that a number of these kids have turned into spoiled brats because Fred Rogers repeatedly told his television audience that they were "special." Lady, are you nuts.....they ARE special!!
Forgive the rant.....it's just that I think we have a new generation of unaware, cell-phone carrying kids who are being raised by cell-phone carrying parents who find it simpler to solve their kid's problems rather than teaching them to get home on their own.
