he should be able to do a lot if he just wants to sight-see. It depends a lot on what he's interested in, though.
Get on the train and check out some of the cities. Munich is great and he can do stuff near there (BMW museum/factory), or Stuttgart for the Porsche museum/factory. Or go south to Switzerland. He can get a train out of Bern or Basel that will give him a look at the Alps. I was just up in Grindewald (3 weeks ago) and there's a good hostel there (Downtown Lodge) which is pretty cheap (~$50 night w/ breakfast). The scenery is spectacular. Great hiking nearby and fabulous pizza at Oncle Tom's.
Then he could get a train back north to Amsterdam or better, Copenhagen, to cross over to Sweden.
I go to Germany once a year and in my experience, most Germans under 30 or so speak some or even reasonable English, and everyone I met in Switzerland did. If he greets them in German and makes an attempt at German, most people will go to English fairly quickly. If he's patient and friendly he'll do fine.
Also, One regular poster here (tuurbo) is in Strasbourg, France for part of the summer, which is sort of where France, Germany and Switzerland meet. He's about 21 or 22, so put a note on the general board for him, maybe they can connect.
