As someone who traveled for almost two months in Europe alone, finding oneself in awkward situations is part of traveling. Germany is not the most difficult place to see knowing only English as many Germans speak decent English, especially when you are only talking about nine days or so. I don't know which part of Germany he is in, but I would stay put for a few days in larger city, I guess Berlin or Munich and regroup. If he goes to a hostel, he might find a group to go to the sites with during the day or he can go alone. The hostel staff will help orient him and a free map should help as well. He could then make his way toward Sweden, stopping in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, etc. or choose another German city for a few days.
