To the concerned parent,
First of all, your son shows great courage in wanting to stay away so far away from home without his buddy - you should be very proud of him.
Also, as others have already pointed out, europeans can by and large, speak reasonable English BUT (this is the important part) have a reluctance to do so unless an attempt is made by the foreigner to talk in that contry's own language first.
There are plenty of translation guides available from tourist information centres etc., they will be extremely usefull as they use a phonetic dictionary for the user. Always have a go at talking in the foreign language first, as it goes a long way in building respect for the tourist.
Europeans will always consider themselves as belonging to a specific country, as opposed to being a part of Europe. They are proud of their own country (normally!) and it's history and culture.
Your son will be having a great time, so please try not to worry too much!
