Today it was time for the summer tune on my daughter's '95 9000 CS. She wanted to learn, so I got out the tools, filters and parts and opened the hood.

My almost 20 year old learned how to gap plugs, use anti-seize, torque them down, put a dab of dielectric grease on the DI boots, change the air and cabin filters. She was 95% hands on and felt great about doing it. We also disconnected the battery so we could clean off some corrosion and regrease the terminals. She'd all ready done an oil change and will do her next one tomorrow or next weekend. She liked the whole thing and sees it as being able to save money and likes the idea of working on the car herself. Ms. Self-sufficient, and I like that a lot.

The 15-year-old, who has *asked* me to teach her this stuff, will learn the same stuff on my '96 CSE tomorrow, plus an oil change. She's psyched since it's a one up on her boyfriend who is basically car mechanically ignorant. He thinks it's neat that his girlfriend is doing this.

In a few weeks, they'll get to learn about brakes, as the '96 is coming due.

This was a ton of fun. They've been seeing me work on our cars all their lives and they finally think it's cool to learn this stuff. Hopefully they'll learn enough so they can avoid being ripped off by some hammer mechanic somewhere down the road. Have to teach them some theory at some point, and how stuff relates, but it's all fun.

If you have kids, get them out there and under the hood.
