When I was in college I got all my walking around money doing tune-ups and other repairs on VWs. This was the mid- '70s so it was all air-cooled V-Dubs which I knew inside & out. Got my parts at a trade discount at a local parts place and had steady business where I actually went to the customer's car and did the work. Got a little cold sometimes in winter, but no biggie.
My kids both seem to want to learn, and if all it does is teach them some basics so they can save a few bucks and helps prevent them from being ripped off I'm a happy guy.
The technology on cars these days means there is less DIY stuff to do, but the basic mechanical stuff is still pretty much the same, and it's a sure-fire place to save money. I'm still amazed at the number of guys I know who are handy otherwise but don't know the first thing about car repair.
