When my wife first got her driving license, her dad was pretty clear - she couldn't drive until she could demonstrate that she could change a tire, check oil and add if necessary, and identify enough engine bits to know if something had fallen off or become disconnected. Yes, this was the early 70's and big American cars, so there was lots of room and simpler engines.
She found out that she was too small to get enough leverage on the tire iron, so they got a breaker bar to travel with. Good to know that early on.
So when she got a flat tire, she could change it, when her big, strapping cousins would just sit by the road because they didn't know where to start. And she checked the fluid and added when necessary. One of her (big, strapping) cousins was given a car by an Aunt and blew it up in a couple of months because he ran it out of oil. When my wife's father asked him if he ever put oil in, his answer was "I never took any out, why should I put any in?"
With the skills she learned from her father, my wife was able to take long road trips with the knowledge that she could handle a lot of stuff. It expanded her world a lot. She's got me to do the wrenching now, but she can tell when the car is safe to drive and when it isn't, and can help me troubleshoot.
