Some "overweight" people have themselves to blaim

but others do not. The recent findings that metabolic rate slows for some who start to diet makes it much more difficult for them to lose weight.
For years my metabolic rate from my playing (cycling, skiing, kayaking, etc in cool Montana & Alaska temps) allowed me to eat all the time with no concern about intake. Weight, clothing fit, blood test results, all remained constant for close to 15 years. As I slowed my pace to keep up with a change in careers, I have to watch a bit more what I eat. But as soon as I again start a heavy play schedule, I again am ravenous.
Each person is different and needs to be aware of how their body responds to differences in food intake and exercise. Have you ever watched what a teenaged boy eats in a day, and tried to stay up?
Much research needs yet to be done. My recent foray in Germany, eating heavy bread with butter and cheese every day for breakfast again allowed me to observe that additional fat in my diet quickly was burned away since I commuted every day to school on a bicycle and walked almost everywhere else.
As we attempt to change our life patterns of eating, exercising and commuting, the "old country" ways seem much more logical.
I expect some will disagree with me; I welcome the discourse.
