Metabolic Rates: eat, eat, eat, never gain a pound

Most people seem to believe that some people are blessed with the ability to eat all they want, without gaining a pound, yet others gain weight just wathcing the food channel. My mom seemed convinced that I could eat, eat, eat, yet not gain weight. As I've aged, that has proven false.
Certainly, there are Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) differences for different age groups, and between the sexes, although that may be mostly due to different muscle mass (which burns the calories).
If indeed I "can eat all I want" (which certainly isn't true), this implies that my body is somehow inefficient (compared to others) with processing what I eat. Yet I have never been slowed down or felt uncomfortable with low blood sugar, and can go all day without eating, if need be. There is no evidence that I NEED more food than others.
Kinda long, but just wondering what others know about this common perception.
Disclaimer: obviously some people have medical conditions involving their thyroid and metabolism. My claim is that most overweight people only have themselves to blaim for their condition, not their genes.
