and not a market leader. I personally owned a Corvair, a couple of models of VW (the fuel injected ones with disk brakes!), a Ford Pinto, a couple of small pickup trucks, and then finally a Toyota Celica Supra (yep, that was how they called the first year of the Supra)...
Basically GM had a very interesing car and bailed on it. Don't tell me about Ralph Nader and his unsafe at any speed either. The Corvair had inner and outer Ujoints and didn't have the issues that solid out axles (VW!) did of having a tire tuck underneath and rolling over in a sharp out of control manuver. The styling was very good for the time, there was an older and a newer body style, and the newer one looked better, had a larger engine, and more interior room.
However, GM, in my opinion, put too many horses in the race. Not just talking about taking a Chevy and putting bling on it and calling it a Pontiac, or a Buick, or supersize the bling and call it a Caddy but real unique models Corvette is one, and they hit a home run and continued to improve it. Or the T-bird, you know the one that they blimped up and then redesigned smaller like the original and hooked the nostaligic crowd.
