So in a hypothetical situation of say putting a Saab 2.3 in the place of a Caddy Northstar and keeping the rest of the car identical, does the turbo still win out. The only weight benefit in such a situation is the engine itself. It sounds as though your saying it still beats the big NA engine, but not by as much due to the vehicle being designed for the heavier engine.
Could one improve on the usage of turbos by making a turbo hybrid such that the combustion engine is always full boost or no boost (never partial throttle) and then come up with some way of diverting some of the full boost power to batteries? Alternatively you could have multiple very small turbo engines and a motor and run various combinations.
