The compression ratio. A n/a engine can have a higher compression
ratio giving the same hp but smaller displacement. Forced induction
gives issues with preignition, so compression ratio needs to be lower.
(Ignition timing is another related issue).
Thus, when off boost, a turbo engine should be less efficient than
an smaller engine with higher compression, producing the same power.
Saab engineers know about this and were developing a variable compression
ratio engine. Engine management deals then with the optimal compression
ratio given load and other parameters. This way, one could potentially
have a responsive engine, high peak hp, and still small displacement.
Unfortunately, GM killed this saab project, but there was 4-cylinder
prototype (I think 1.6l) build.
