In the age when desktops from Dell, Toshiba, HP, etc. are starting as low as $300.00 with Vista Home Premium.....
I know my machine cost between 1.5x to 2x the retail machines of the day...but every component I selected was a quality component, and I could replace them myself if trouble arose--which it has not done--- without calling for proprietary service and paying $$$$ big bucks.
And I wanted a QUIET computer--my desktop sits ON my desk--not below the desk....5+ years ago, that was not in the entry level retail computers. Those older boxes had fans that were loud and on full blast all the time---likely due to poor case ventilation, plus power supply fans that increased even louder as heat built up in the case...response by some was the "blow hole" fan in the top of the case...which actually let out the unwanted sound into the work space....
I have 2 fans in the case undervolted ...one is the 120m rear case fan, and the second is an 80mm fan on the hard drives....The Seasonic PS (120mm fan) is legendary for not ramping up the rpms when the case starts to warm.
Larger fans (120mm) moving more air at less rpms than their smaller counterparts....
