and that should tie you over a few more years. You can still get computers with XP from online sellers from their business machine line. You can have XP preloaded with a no-cost upgrade to Vista later.
Building your own machine is really not worth the time these days unless you enjoy doing such things or you have very specific components you must have in your machine. You can always buy a machine that is as close to what you want and then put on or take off things you don't want later.
The hardware is almost always ahead of applications. Any 64-bit CPUs + OS will rarely be fully used unless you have very specific software that requires a true 64-bit machine.
I have come to terms with machine/OS being a memory hog as long as I get good performance. If you get memory to spare, why let them sitting idle 8-)??
