I plan on running the furnace during heating season, the sump pump, and maybe a refrigerator. We can "tough out" everything else, but heat and a dry basement are imperatives.
I was in Eastern OH on business when the multi-state black-out hit in 2003. The immediate area where I was staying still had power! I was able to call my wife back in MI who asked me to get a generator if any were available there. I drove back to MI with a new Harbor Freight generator and two five gallon cans of gas. As I was pulling into my driveway the utility power returned. The generator is still in the box, although the Honda engine's crankcase has been filled with oil.
