Northern Equipment sells a nifty emergency sub-panel Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 7 Dec 2008 08:31:33 In Reply to: Re: How do you interface with the house, TG, Sat, 6 Dec 2008 10:06:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This is on my list of things to get done. The cost of the smallest sub-panel is around $100 IIRC and allows you to move a limited number of circuits from your main panel-board to this small panel. It includes the manual transfer switch so that the generator will not back-feed onto the grid (a $10K fine in many places!) Connecting a twist-lock receptacle to this panel outdoors in a weather-proof box gives you a perfect place to plug in the generator using a male-to-male cord.
I would like to move the circuits feeding the furnace, the sump pump, the bathroom lighting circuit, and maybe one kitchen circuit ('fridge and micro-wave) With only 3KW from my generator this is probably too aggresive, hence my desire for a larger Natural Gas powered unit.
They also sell larger emergency power panels for use with larger generators feeding an entire house.
