If you are going 10-20 miles up the road to fish another spot, then yes should be no problem. And no, I have no experience hauling these things but do have a lot of experience hauling canoes, kayaks, sailboats, etc. These pontoons are pretty big when you set them up next to a car. Lots of wind resistance which is tough on the pontoon and mileage. If you are going to haul it 50-100miles I'd deflate and stuff it in back. I'm not sure how your's is set up but you may need to haul the frame outside the car if it does not fold up enough. In any case I strongly recommend Saab's roof rack. Great design and made by Thule and wonderful for hauling all kinds of stuff including 4X8 sheets of plywood, and once I hauled 10 2x6x20' joists. Wouldn't do that again, bent the rack!
Your major concern is securing the pontoon securely to the car. The rack is strong, and good straps across the pontoon and attached to the rack can be 50%+ of the tiedown. I also tie down to my towing eye in front and the trailer hitch in back for canoes. You would be amazed at how much force a semi truck will blast you with when he goes by at 65mph in the opposite direction of your 60mph. I would make sure it is secure at least in front.
Have you bought your pontoon yet? I'm biased to canoes and kayaks. I know a pontoon is a good platform to flyfish from, but they do need to be inflated, have a tough time sneaking through log jams on a river, can be punctured more easily, and cost about the same as a good canoe or kayak. I'm guessing they are also easier to propel. My Grumman cost my dad ~$200 over 50yrs ago, and we have invested a like sum in wax, paddles, cushions and lifejackets over that time. It looks like new even though it has been in all 5 great lakes, Atlantic Ocean, Yellowstone Lake, and hundreds of rivers and streams. Gotta think my grandsons will be playing with it 50 yrs from now.
Just a thought. I'm sure pontoons are great for a lot of circumstances. They just seem more bulky than I would have expected, and I have seen guys unable to fit an inflated one into a pickup-too wide. I'd ask to see it set up next to or on top of the car before taking the plunge.
Whatever the method you use to get out there, enjoy! Life is good when you're fishing, and somehow flyfishing makes it just a bit more interesting!
