Which kind? Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Tue, 3 Feb 2009 13:15:56 In Reply to: Teach myself to weld?, Joe [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 3 Feb 2009 03:15:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As noted, there are lots of different kinds of welding - electric arc and flame, and then the various Inert Gas welding for the more 'exotic' metals.
I'd stay away from self-taught IG welding to start - screw up welding magnesium and you'll make the local Emergency Response Team scoreboard, if not CNN. Iron - that's a good place to start. Arc welding has the advantage of no flammable gasses to store and leak - just a big power outlet. And not big flame to get out of hand. Yes, electricity is dangerous, but anything fun is.
Also, ask around where you work - you'd be surprised what some folks have in their garage. I know one guy at work that had a complete IG welding setup - he couldn't figure out how anybody could own a home and not be able to unclog a toilet, free up a garbage disposal, and weld titanium and stainless steel.
