Are you dead set on arc welding? Posted by DougM [Email] (#211) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DougM) on Tue, 3 Feb 2009 15:32:55 In Reply to: Teach myself to weld?, Joe [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 3 Feb 2009 03:15:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
What do you plan on welding?
A wire feed welder(flux core wire) is another form of arc welding, which in my opinion is more useful for around the house type repairs. Most ~100 amp welders can weld a maximum of 1/4" with flux core wire, and can do much thinner stock if you turn the heat and speed down. Another point is they'll run on 110 volts. Higher amp welders may require a 220 connection, which limits where you can use it. If you don't like the "dirty" looking welds with a flux core wire, some can be converted to MIG with a conversion kit and bottle of shielding gas.
Safety > do not weld around flammable liquids, rags, or paper, as sparks tend to fly, and with a shield over your head, you may start a sunstantial fire without knowing it.
