I have had nothing but Harbor Freight jacks for probably a decade now, and I've never had any issues... ok, not never - the second one I bought in 2001 wouldn't hold pressure out of the box, so I returned it and got another one. That one lasted until 2008... it started leaking in the cold, which was a messy pain. I'm just about a year into this third one.
I suspect you got a bad jack, or maybe it's just failing of old age?
I do a ton of work on cars - there is not a weekend of the year it's not in use. Aside from my own six cars, I always end up helping friends out, and I invariably buy a car or two every year to fix and sell (to fund my own car habit :). Point is, Harbor Freight's jacks may be cheap, but they are pretty durable... I highly recommend their ~$150 aluminum jobs - really convenient, and they've been doing very well for me. Pretty sure they're the same ones Sears sells for almost twice as much. They certainly look very, very similar.
