I was in the exact same boat as you about ten years ago - loved cars, and was tired of getting reamed by auto mechanics who just knew more than I did. A little dishonesty, a little greed, and a little unfamiliarity with my car really did wonders for my bottom line. Like, erasing it.

I had an '90 900T which I loved to death, and was pretty much terrified to take a wrench to it for fear that I would destroy something. My only car, my only real asset in life - it wasn't worth experimenting on.

So I bought a POS '85 900T that was in sorry shape for not a lot of money and went to town on it. I figured I would either get it running or not, but it wasn't a big investment so if I failed it wasn't a big deal. I learned a lot from that car - really invaluable stuff that I wouldn't have been brave enough to discover on my "real car."

That suggestion below about buying a British car isn't really bad. My personal advice would be to maybe find a '90s Toyota or VW to mess around with. At the end of the day a car is a car, and by and large what applies to one applies to them all. Sure, every brand & model has its own quirks, but the fundamentals don't change. Nice thing about a '90s VW or Toyota is broad availability of parts and generally cheap prices. A '90s Saab is going to be built around some pricey systems that are just too expensive to learn on (IMHO) and something like an old British car will probably include a bunch of hard to find parts (largely cosmetic stuff, I'm sure) and won't really be representative of recent car technology. Maybe go find a '90s Chevy pickup that needs a clutch or transmission - nice thing about trucks is that they are generally easy to work on (lots of unused space) and, when it's done, you can use it to go save Saabs. :)
