It's doable to switch career paths. I was one. Out of high school I went to school to become an archaeologist. Got an honours degree, worked here and there. I was always a mechanic at heart though, always tinkering with cars, rebuilding engines, building engines etc. After a few years of on-and-off jobs I decided, 'screw it, I'm going to be a tech'. Now unlike Anders who is a master in the Saab trade, I went to gas turbines (jet engines). Several years go I went to tech school and did a mechanical engineering diploma, specialising in gas turbine overhaul. I'm now working for a very successful Canadian company as a certified Rolls Royce overhaul and field service technician, overhauling, testing and providing field service for the Rolls Royce RB211 industrial gas turbine in the oil, gas and power generation industry. I love my job, I'm insanely busy during this economic downturn, and I get to travel all over the world (I was in Angola last month!).
If you have the desire, you can do it. The hardest part in doing a career 180 is dropping everything and accepting that you are once again at hte bottom of the totem pole. But if you think long term trades can be very rewarding.
