Sarah,
My mantra when it comes to car repair is that if I know what is wrong I can't make it worse by trying to do it myself. If I can't do I can always take it to someone who can. What I have given up is spare time, some blood, and space in the garage.
Armed with the repair manuals, internet, mechanical ability, good tools, and the ability to get personal satisfaction for doing it yourself you will be fine.
That said, having a spare vehicle available to do part runs is crucial. Of course a taxi will do in a pinch.
I'm a type of person who reads and rereads and reads some more when a problem arises so I am comfortable with the procedure, have the right tools and parts ready. Of course being OCD helps here.
I recently parted out a 95 V6 convertible and it was a HUGE learning experience, certainly cheaper than my college courses. Cars really aren't built any different then anything else. Other then putting the bolts where you can neither see them or contort to reach.
So, don't let anyone say you can't. If you can't, you at least tried so when the next thing comes up you will be able to. And it always takes twice as long as you think it will even after you doubled how long it should take you.
