Then build it up as you go. The best are, as others note, Snap-On and Matco, but they also cost more. Craftsman from Sears are good tools, have lifetime warranties and do the job, but are a step or two down from the good pro tools. As you work on cars more, you'll get other tools and learn what you like and don't like. Stanley, for example, has some nice tools these days and they have a lifetime warranty.

Get both 3/8 and 1/2 drive sockets, ratchets, breaker bars, extensions, etc. Have both deep and shallow sockets. Get large size sockets for specific jobs, like the front axle nut.
Good screwdrivers and Torx head drivers.
Nut drivers
Assorted pliers (needlenose, linesman, dikes, vice grips, etc)
Wire cutters/strippers
A small 1/4 drive set of metric sockets is very useful a couple times a year.
A ball peen hammer
Rubber mallet
3-4 pound hammer (never force anything, get a bigger hammer!)
A 2'long iron pipe to fit over a breaker bar to give added leverage
You may need a GOOD hydraulic floor jack (3 ton)
Jack stands (critical)
Possibly ramps (Rhino ramps work well)
Wheel chocks
Crow bar
Oil filter wrench
Torque wrench good to 150 pounds
OBD 2 Code reader
Multi-meter
Lights to illuminate dark places
Telescoping magnet
Electric drill
Cordless drill
Dremel tool
Bench vise
Bench grinder w/ wire wheel
Assorted clamps
Maybe some specialized Saab tools (harder to find)
Safety glasses
Latex gloves
Mechanic's gloves

There's plenty more.

HOWEVER... you are still learning all this and the learning curve can be very steep and frustrating, especially since you're a kinda novice mechanic and will be working on a variety of cars, none of which you have any history with. You need to learn how cars are put together, how they work, and how SPECIFIC models differ from each other. That takes time and a lot of wrenching.

Good luck with this, and I hope it works well for you.
