Like what others have said, used high quality tools are the way to go. If you feel this the direction you wish to take in life, what your local Sears has to offer will not do. Snap On is the best all around(IMHO), though Matco makes my favorite screwdriver/ nut driver/ torx driver sets.
Other than the basics, I would recommend a coolant pressure tester, code reader for basic CEL checks, test light/ volt meter, serp. belt tensioner tool, Torx sockets AND drivers. If you are going to be using air tools, impact sockets are a must.
The most important tool for any late model 9000, NG900, 9-3 9-5 is the Tech II diagnostics scanner. Sadly, the Tech II is ungodly expensive and not practical at this time.
All in all, being a mechanic will almost always be very expensive. Depending on what level you wish to achieve, you can spend anywhere from $20,000 to $200,000 on tools. To top it off, you will always have to buy more tools/ diag updates as cars get more technical.
I would stick to the basics and see if this is going to work out for you. Used Snap On tools can be had for the price of Craftsman, and your knuckles will thank you.
