If not then you either take the path of least resistance and buy cars with autoboxes or have both automatic and manual cars in the driveway. No need to have transmission preference be an issue, assuming you'll have 2 cars. If you'll only have one car it should probably be one that both of you can drive.
My wife can drive a stick but has had an auto trans since 1996. But she drives my 5-speed no problem. This gives us great flexibility.
Daughter #1 (almost 21) has an automatic but can more or less drive a stick. Wants a stick in her next car. Only a few of her friends can drive a stick, so it's fun for her.
Daughter #2 (almost 16) is learning on both. Likes driving the manual car.
I think it's important for any driver to know how to do both, but that's getting harder to do. It's sad to see manual transmissions disappearing.
