Wow, thanks for all the input. Yea, I'm not sure where the reliability myth came into play, but the 2.3 is (at least in my tbird) dead simple to work on, and pretty bulletproof. I replaced the timing belt a few years ago in about an hour and half. I had been looking for another c900 that I could drive a few days a week, but lately its been slim pickings up in new england. This merkur seems like it'd make a nice substitute, provided the body's in the shape the guy says it is. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow...really the last thing I need right now with my ongoing Rx-7 resto, and a tbird that needs a little work, but I can't really pass it up.
One question - how's the engine bay in terms of size? I know on the tbird, it's designed to also house the 5.0, so theres an echo when you crank a wrench on the 2.3 - sooo nice. Thanks again!
