Yeah - a trip to Home Depot is on my to-do list today. The problem is killing me - dozens of 900Ts and not a single untraceable leak, ever. This particular problem is the *only* elusive XR4Ti issue I've ever had, and I've done *everything* to do this car - coilovers, transmission swaps, wholesale brake replacement, head gasket. Craziness. :)
I'm not much of a radio listener, but I've been told about Jim Rome's railing against XR4Tis. I think two things - 1) When they came out I don't think most FLM mechanics were properly trained on the cars, and they are simply not like other domestic Fords. 2) These days, the trouble spots have been well worked through and solutions are easy and known. In the thick of it back in the '80s, these cars were a hodgepodge of pieces and nailing down problems was probably difficult.
I shopped for most of ten years for one of these cars. When I started looking hard in the late '90s, there were still a bunch of unknowns, and problems that had not been addressed. Two of the big ones were the rear disk brake conversions and the T-5 transmission swap - things that I really wanted to have. When I finally bought this one in ~2005 (IIRC) all that stuff had been dialed in. Most of the things you want to do to these cars are available in kits - simple to deal with parts that require little fabrication.
Point in case - it's been two decades since Ford stopped making these cars, but just last year someone realized you can essentially bolt the 7.5" LSD from a Camaro in. A couple small pieces are needed, and some clearancing in the pumpkin is required, but you can have a full Eaton LSD installed in your XR4Ti for under $700. 20 years to figure that out! You should see all the alternatives that are available, but they all require massive surgery. This is a simple, effective, cheap solution that nobody ever realized...
