between making something deliberately cheap, like the Neon, as opposed to making an good, affordable small car.
It's not an issue of a Fit or Civic compared to an Acura RL. The Fit & Civic are still perfectly good small cars with decent suspensions and equipment. But trash like the Neon, the Pinto, Vega, Geo Metro, Chevette, early Escorts, Horizon and other disastrous domestic small cars were simply cheap cars. And the goons running GM, Ford, and Chrysler could never understand why people bought Hondas and Toyotas instead.
I remember back in about 1979, a friend comparing her Chevette to my VW Scirocco. She couldn't believe my car was so much better. But it was the one we took on ski trips. It was a lot more than the 10 hp the VW had that made it a much better small car.
