My opinion, absolutely not worth it. A CPO warranty through Saab, by all means hell yeah! These are great; you really can't go wrong. But I will never in my life pay for an "extended warranty." First off, they're expensive. Second, they're useless. The warranty companies never honor anything! There are so many exclusions and loop holes and stuff that it's totally not worth buying.
I assume your 48k miles/48 months thing is added to the mileage you had when you bought the warranty? What mileage will this bring you to? Probably about 100k, right? In my experience and from what I've read on the board, the 9-5 doesn't really need a whole lot of attention (besides maintenance) before 100k; rarely $2500 worth. If there was a warranty available for after 100k miles, I might see why it would be more practical, but good luck finding a warranty company to cover a Saab with 100k+ miles on it.
There are some cases where extended warranties aren't terrible, as Clay mentions below. He bought one THROUGH Nissan. I think when you can get one through the car's manufacturer it's better, but Saab doesn't offer this, right? My uncle has a 2004 Audi A6 2.7t S-Line. He bought the Audi extended warranty and I think it's paid for itself about six times. It looks pretty sharp but boy that car is a money toilet. Awful, awful, awful; I'd never trade my 9-5 for one. Audi also pays for hotel stays if your car sh*ts the bed while you're away from home, haha.
I'll tell you what my extended warranty is; my $20 yearly subscription to Saabnet. With everything I've learned on here and the knowledge-base that's always available, I'm pretty confident I can do a lot of jobs myself, and there is an abundance of online parts suppliers. Of course if there's expensive equipment I need I have my favorite independent Saab shop down the road if I'm not up for the job.
