We had the CPO on our 9-5 wagon, and it has been good. It's paid for rear shocks, several minor things, a new DI. Probably not equal to what it added to the price of the car, but not far off if I was paying for the work, and it's my wife's car, so that makes it worth it.
We had one from Ford on an Exploder and it was only worthwhile because I got it for half price at the end of a sales month. But it did cover some things. Think I broke even.
I had one on my '96 9K, from an aftermarket company sold thru the indy dealer/repair shop I bought the car from. It probably added $1000 to the price of the car. Was good for two years on a car with 90K on it. No deductible. Bought me a couple of calipers, a heater core, an A/C compressor and some other things, labor and all parts. Couldn't complain!
So they've worked for me, but the price you're quoting is too high, IMHO. Shop around.
OR... set $150/month aside in an account for repairs. Better the money in your bank than the insurance company's.
