This will be a bit contrary to others here, but here it goes. Everytime I've had an extended warranty, it has easily paid for itself and definitely saved me money. With that said, 2 of the warranties were directly through Saab (the CPO program) and it was very easy because Saab covers almost everything through the dealer, and the dealer doesn't care one bit about dealing with a CPO vehicle in my experience.
The other 2 experiences were with 1)Cross Country Motor Club, bought through a VW dealer on a used 97 VW GTI, I got my moneys worth for sure on that one too, the dealer didn't care about working with the warranty company, but sometimes it did delay repairs like you said because the dealer has to call and get approval, etc. 2)GM Major Guard warranty on a 2000 Subaru Legacy wagon, again, got my moneys worth easily, they even replaced 2 pistons, you can imagine how expensive that would've been. With GM, on major repairs like the pistons, they sent someone to the Subaru dealer to inspect, on smaller repairs like oil leaks, etc, no inspection was necessary. Luckily I had a good relationship with this Subaru dealer and they didn't mind dealing with the warranty company.
I found giving the mechanic or whoever helped you a 6 pack or 12 pack of beer after dealing with the warranty company went a long way for me having good will with the mechanic/store.
So, those are my experiences. Frankly, I'll never buy a used car again unless I get a certified one, such as the Saab CPO program, or whatever manufacturer it is.
I think instead of doing nothing though, at least take that money and put it aside in your "repairs" account and use it as necessary. I bet you'll go through it pretty fast though.
Good luck.
