I got an extended warranty on my first Saab (1997 900SE coupe) through warranty gold. It was bumper to bumper and cost about $1400. It paid for itself 3x over at least!
Nest, I bought a WG warranty for my wife's 2001 VW GTI GLX, about $1800. Got back about 1/3 of that on repairs before the reinsurer for warranty gold went belly-up, essentially nullifying that warranty. Given that I came out way ahead on the previous warranty, I wasn't too upset, but it still sucked. Now it's in litigation and only a few (insert disparaging description here) lawyers will get any benefit out of it.
I like the idea of putting money away every month for a car-fund, but we just float a good chunk of money in our checking account and resign ourselves to the fact that Saabs can be expensive to own, but in the end, it's worth it for the driving experience and utility (your experience may vary).
I don't think I'd ever get one again. Check the background of ANY warranty company if you can. FWIW - WG was back in business the next day with a different reinsurer writing policies and denying all claims from previous warranty holders.
