If it is that new Euro safety standards are driving modern car design, then I think designers have found a convenient excuse for copy-cat designing. In my mind, a designer should be able to say: given a set of restriction, how creatively reinterpret elements that define my product while meeting new standards and current design sensibilities. The best example of this in the car world is Porsche. The modern day design of the 911 /993 is bares strong similarity to the those of previous years. Yet, I doubt anyone would say that the new Porsches lack a modern look and feel. The same can be said for the BMW Mini.
A modern redesign that mucked with a successful and recognizable product was that of the Subaru WRX Imprezza. The first time I saw the new design I was shocked at how far remove the new design was from the former. All the clues that made the WRX recognizable were gone. Quite frankly were I not able to read the badges, I would not have recognized it as a Subaru. From my understanding Subaru sales were doing just fine with those quirkly looking cars. Anyhow ......
So, if the C900 (or 99 Turbo) and 9000s were the design that came to define Saabs to many, it seems prudent to retain the defining elements as designs progress. Porsche is a good comparison for Saab because both company produce cars with unique design; BMW, Audi, MB are not because essentially these companies cars were regarded more for other qualities than unique design.
