I too thought start buttons were a joke until I rented an Infiniti G37. You never had to take the key out of your pocket (or purse for those who carry one!). Lock and unlock the doors via the button on the door handle and start the car with the push of a button without ever fumbling with a key. When designed properly, it's great. Some cars still require the key to be put into a slot on the dash and then push the button; I agree that's a terrible gimmick. However, the Infiniti version is brilliant and definitely a change for the better.
