I don't think it's fair to take sides at this point, and I think we can only hope the truth of what actually happened will come out.
I don't think who was at fault in the original 'minor accident' has been report. It's also a possibility that the cyclist flat out assault the driver. What choices would the driver then have but to drive off? And if the cyclist clung to the car and continued to assault him, he has a right to defend himself and his family. Clearly the above is purely conjecture, but in my option is a scenario where the driver would have limited or no guilt, though he'll surely be paying the price in his career and mental state for a long time to come.
I'm also a cyclist (in NYC) and a driver. Both groups can behave like idiots, but there are a lot of macho cyclists out there just waiting to go off on a driver that slights them in some way.
Look at the past of these two guys, one is a respected community leader with no reported history of violence, and one was drunk and in police custody only an hour before. If I was drunk and had been detained by the police and was in a vehicle accident, I don't think I would be in too good a mood either.
I don't think it's fair to blame either part at this point. If you read about both of their days it makes it even sadder (cyclist having an alcohol relapse, and driver celebrating his 12th wedding anniversary). Sadly, there aren't going to be any winners here.
