Yesterday I was in the FedEx Office center at McCormick Place in Chicago trying to ship a 20 lb. box of assorted papers, books and samples from a trade show.

Although several people worked there, only two could actually handle shipping. I was shipping via FedEx Ground so they wanted me to buy the box instead of simply supplying it as is done with the Express service. BUt the person who sells you the box can't handle shipping and the person doing the shipping can't sell you the box. So while the shipping clerks were taking their time not helping other customers, I see a sign noting that it would cost an extra $20 over and above the shipping cost to ship from there--about a buck a pound for my box of stuff. (So I'd be looking at $40 and change to send the box via ground for 3-5 day delivery.)

Then the clerk can't use the corporate account number of the guy in front of me (the account was that of a very solvent $3 billion company).

I finally gave up, walked out and checked the box as luggage for the plane ride home. At even an inept USPS office I'd have been out of there in 10 minutes. Instead I got nada in 20 at FedEx.

I use FedEx otherwise, but this place was nuts.
