The way the USPS works, junk mail

("standard mail" in USPS-speak) is supposed to pay much of the operating costs. That is all 3rd class and the volume is far above that of first-class mail which is letters, greeting cards, bills, statements, EOBs from insurance companies, trade confirms, remittances for bills, etc. First class, along with packages and "flats" (large envelopes) used to be where there was a "profit" or surplus.
But no more. Junk mail is down dramatically, as is first class, largely due to electronic payment and email (people don't write letters anymore).
Some of my business relates closely to direct and transactional mail and the word from USPS is that elimination of Saturday delivery is a done deal. And rural areas may not see daily delivery much longer--more like 3-4 days a week.
USPS isn't required to be profitable, just self-supporting. It's now being adjusted to keep it that way, and it will get more expensive. But compared to mailing costs in Europe it's still a good deal.
