I do remember the good old days with Ma Bell!
When you could get a basic phone line for $15/month (without long-distance). I'm paying Verizon about $45/month now for the same thing. When you could call repair service and they'd actually work on the problem until it was fixed. When you could dial "0" and speak to a human. When they'd proactively come out and trim branches away from the wires instead of waiting until an ice storm takes them out then blaming the storm.
I actually knew a few people who worked for the phone company "back then" (1980's and '90's) and they had very high standards, both technically and regarding who they'd hire. Now I think the technical standard is to make sure the bills go out on time, and the personnel standard is they have to have a pulse (although I'm pretty sure some of them cheated on that test).
End of rant ;^)
